Mitsouko... This name that means mystery in Japanese, is also that of the heroine in Claude Farrère's novel, La Bataille. Caught between the oath she has made to her husband, the powerful Admiral Togo, and her secret love for an officer from her country’s enemy camp, Mitsouko nobly struggles against her heart’s desires. Inspired by this woman, Jacques Guerlain created this subtly androgynous, yet wildly feminine chypre. To lend it incredible modernity, the perfumer combined the fruity, velvety spiciness of peach accord with the woody scent of patchouli for the first time. This daring combination with the taste of a forbidden fruit makes Mitsouko a ground-breaking, avant-garde fragrance and the symbol of a strong femininity that dares to reveal its masculine side.

A legend of impossible love, a secret union of spicy peach and patchouli

A masterpiece in balance and originality, Mitsouko combines a fruity peach note with jasmine and rose centifolia (May rose) flowers. Its mysterious base combines spicy notes with notes of undergrowth and vetiver.

PEACH ACCORD

Our peach accord is an original creation made by Guerlain perfumers.
This accord expresses the fruity olfactory fragrance of a velvety peach.

SPICES

A surprising and bewitching play on olfactory opposites, warm spices such as black pepper mingle with cold spices such as cardamom and pink berries.

PATCHOULI

Patchouli essence features many vegetal, woody and earthy olfactory facets.
Combined with rose, moss and bergamot, patchouli forms the base of the chypre accord.

HOUSE SECRETS

The idea behind Jacques Guerlain’s Mitsouko, and what gave the perfume its sense of modernity, was his daring choice to combine a Chypre note with a note with as much fruitiness as peach.

A LEGENDARY BOTTLE

Designed by Raymond Guerlain in 1912, its iconic “inverted heart” bottle is underscored with graceful scrolls typical of Art Nouveau. Its avant-garde stopper, in the form of a hollowed heart, evokes the delicate romanticism of this perfumery masterpiece and represented a real technical feat at the time.
