L'Abeille - Guerlain

The Bee:
iconic emblem

In 1853, Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain created a special fragrance for the Empress Eugénie on the occasion of her marriage to Napoléon III, a citrusy Eau de Cologne which, not unsurprisingly, he named “Eau de Cologne Impériale”. The bottle, engraved with his majesty’s coat of arms, was made by the Pochet & de Courval glassworks. Guerlain's emblematic Bee also symbolised the Emperor. The Empress was so impressed with Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain’s creation that he was granted the title: “His Majesty's Official Perfumer”.
And the legend was born.

Abeille Royale

Bee products are some of the world’s most effective natural repairing and healing substances. Guerlain Research extracts their powerful active ingredients to create Abeille Royale: a skin care programme that stimulates the skin’s key healing mechanisms continuously improving wrinkles and boosting tissue firmness. The range contains exceptional active ingredients; Guerlain’s “Made in France” Royal Jelly and “Pure Honey from the Ouessant Black Bee”.

Aqua Allegoria

For the Aqua Allegoria range, created in 1999, the sculptor Robert Granai took his inspiration from the famous Abeilles bottle to create this new collection. He replaced the bees with a honeycomb motif.
Guerlain is proud to present its collection of six perfumes (Pamplelune, Mandarine Basilic, Pera Granita, Herba Fresca) plus one new creation (Bergamote Calabria) and one exclusive creation (Rosa Fizz).

- Bees and our sustainable commitment -

  • In the name of beauty

For Guerlain, being committed to protecting our planet’s biodiversity and our bees is essential for ensuring the sustainability of our creations and our know-how.

Ouessant black bee

Guerlain’s quest for the most powerful bee products led us to the island of Ouessant. Following the creation of our Abeille Royale skin care range, we founded the Mécénat Développement Durable (sustainable development patronage programme) with the Brittany Black Bee Conservatory Association in Ouessant. Our commitment was recognised in 2013 when we were awarded the Mécénat Développement Durable “Coup de Cœur” prize by the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy.

  • OFA

The french apidology observatory (OFA)

Since 2015, Guerlain has been supporting the French Apidology Observatory (OFA) by helping the NGO reach its goal of training 30,000 new bee-keepers and creating 10 million new bee colonies in Europe by 2025.

Bee universities

In May 2017, Guerlain presented its first “Bee Universities” at 68, avenue des Champs-Elysées. This was an opportunity to discuss - with leading French specialists - the benefits of biodiversity and the world of bees as well as practical solutions to better protect them and prevent their disappearance. The success of this first edition will give rise to additional meetings in 2018.

- Bees and our exceptional editions -

Created by Lorenz Baümer, the unique Secret de la Reine perfume jewel can be worn as a clip or pendant on a chain. Over 14 carats of diamonds and over 500 hours of work. Applying pressure to the pear-shaped diamond that adorns the bee's belly leads its wings to unfold, diffusing the chosen fragrance.

  • Secret de la Reine
  • Bee silver wings

The Bee is embodied in the shape of this precious hand-crafted bottle made from Baccarat crystal. Its wings create a beautiful interplay of transparencies coupling golden reflections with shimmers of silver. For these three editions, Thierry Wasser created an exceptional fragrance for this jewellery-bottle; an ultra-exclusive limited edition (fifty numbered pieces) on sale in Guerlain Boutiques worldwide.

- Bees and art -

  • Vol des Abeilles

Bees inform our relationship with art. They are a constant source of inspiration and influence all our cultural initiatives such as the “Vol des Abeilles”, a golden metal artwork by Gérard Cholot that greets all visitors to the Guerlain Boutique at 68, Champs-Elysées.

Bees and street art:
the Abeilles bottle with a JonOne twist!

Guerlain asked the famous graffiti artist, JonOne, to put his unique stamp on the iconic Abeilles bottle. The result: Three fragrances and three colour universes. JonOne invented three colourways: blues for Shalimar, pinks for La Petite Robe Noire and oranges for Rose Barbare. These exceptional numbered limited edition one-litre creations are all signed by JonOne. Additional rare pieces are on sale at 68, Champs-Elysées.

Bee and literature

The Abeilles de Guerlain are also used to promote a short story competition aimed at unpublished authors. The aim of the prize, which was started in 2014 in partnership with Cherche Midi, is to promote literature and creative talent. The 2016 theme was “Touch”. All the royalties are donated to the Restos du Cœur charity to help fund their literacy programme.

- Bees and our cherished locations -

  • Orphin

Bees and our production sites:
Orphin & La Ruche

In 2010, Guerlain set up ten hives on its Orphin perfume production site; the honey produced by its bees is sold at 68, Champs-Elysées.
Our La Ruche cosmetics production site, which was inaugurated in 2015, was the result of a design approach involving all our employees. This shared approach also included the naming of the site - La Ruche (French for The Hive). Very special focus was placed on biodiversity and the landscaping of the green spaces: eight hives have been installed on the site, which allows all 350 employees to receive their very own pot of honey each year.

Bees and our boutiques
