The scent of boundless love

How far would you go for love? As an opera lover, Jacques Guerlain discovered the answer to this burning question within the lyrical love story of Puccini's opera, Turandot, and Liu, its heroine. Painting her olfactory portrait, the perfumer paid homage to a woman who was prepared to sacrifice anything for the man she loved, sketching a love story telling the tale of a rare, unconditional love. In this aldehydic floral, flights of jasmine and rose sing with a carnal sensuality that vibrates with iris and vanilla on a woody base. A sensual fragrance for lovers of the shadows.

A legend of unconditional love, vibrating with aldehydes, rose and jasmine

Like an olfactory ode, aldehydes play their most beautiful role in fragrance by dominating the head of the Liu fragrance and announcing with a cymbal-like chime, rose and jasmine’s sensual scented arrival. Like any piece of music, a fragrance needs to linger with a sense of calm sensuality, which it does with Liu thanks to vanilla’s carnal accents which give way to iris and woody notes.

JASMINE

Jasmine grandiflorum absolute comes mainly from India. First the flowers are processed to create a concrete before being transformed into an absolute.
Picked at dawn, jasmine grandiflorum, brings a green, fruity jasmine note to fragrance.

ROSE

Harvested in Bulgaria and too delicate to travel, roses are made into an essential oil on site using steam and/or direct fire distillation.
The resulting rose oil brings a floral and fruity note to fragrances.

HOUSE SECRETS

Following L'Heure Bleue, which introduced aldehydes to perfume composition for the first time, Jacques Guerlain opted to use the synthetic molecules again to compose Liu, a timelessly legendary fragrance in which aldehydes make the fragrance’s "white flowers sing".

A LEGENDARY BOTTLE

Designed by Raymond Guerlain in 1912, its iconic “inverted heart” bottle is underscored with graceful scrolls typical of Art Nouveau. Its avant-garde stopper, in the form of a hollowed heart, evokes the delicate romanticism of this perfumery masterpiece and represented a real technical feat at the time.
